Installation

Why do we recommend setting our frame using either a template door or the actual door for the opening?

The clearance between the door and a Timely frame is established by adjusting the frame position to fit the door being used. This assures that these clearances will be correct for any door of a similar prep. Also, by actually having the door in the opening, the door and frame can be tested to make sure there is no bind or twist and that everything will function properly.

How long should it take to install a Timely frame?

Once the installer has become familiar with the installation, it should take about 15 minutes to complete the door and frame installation.

How can an installer learn the proper way to install Timely Frames?

Installation CD’s are available from Timely’s marketing department or the installer can connect to YouTube and enter “Timely Frames” for the same installation videos. We also recommend that the installer read the installation instruction Sheet(s) packaged in the frame carton or in the Timely Technical Manual.

What are some of the features that make installation of Timely frames much easier than traditional hollow metal frames?

1. Because door and frame are installed together, only one trip is required to the opening. Primed hollow metal frames require numerous trips to distribute, install and finish the frame 2. Considerably less time is required to install a Timely frame since the door and frame are installed as a unit. Traditional hollow metal frames must be installed at the beginning of a project and are easily knocked out of alignment requiring difficult frame adjustment. 3. Timely frames are installed after finishing the walls eliminating damage and jobsite call backs. 4. Sidelights and borrowed lights are knocked down, therefore, contractor can finish walls before installing and the frames are much easier to distribute when compared to a welded hollow metal frames.

What do we put over our Brass and Stainless Steel frames?

We supply the frames with a peel off coating that protects the finish until the building is ready for occupancy.

Can Timely frames be lead lined?

Timely frames can be lead lined by lead shielding companies familiar with the installation of lead on the frame and installation of the frame on the wall. Timely does not lead line frames.

Why do we recommend screws instead of nails for most Timely frame applications?

By using screws, the frame can easily be taken off the wall and relocated. During installation, use of screws makes it easier to adjust the frame pieces. With a screwdriver you eliminate hitting the frame and damaging it.

What size fasteners are used with the Timely frame for wood studs and for steel studs?

For both wood studs and steel studs use a 1 1/4" bugle head drywall screw. Frames installed in fire rated openings must have sufficient screw penetration into the stud.

Add appropriate dimension to length of screw for additional layers of drywall, furring, sheathing, shear panel or other material

What is the recommended method for setting a full height frame?

By using a magnetic level on both header and hinge side considering the high side of the floor. Secure header and hinge side. Hang door and adjust strike side.

When a Timely frame is sleeved over a wall that is too thick for the frame being used, what is the major problem with hanging the door and why?

If our frame is sleeved over a wall that is too thick, the nailing flange spreads which causes the frame to cup at the hinge rabbet. Essentially, this creates a beveled condition for the frame leaf on the hinge. When the frame is beveled, it moves the pivot point of the hinge toward the strike side and makes it difficult to maintain proper alignment of the jamb and header. If this condition is severe, we suggest using the A series adjustable frame to remedy the situation or a frame with a larger wall size.

Why do we recommend our 5" (50) frame?

When installing the Timely frame in a steel stud wall, the frame must be 1/8" wider than the stud size because the stud actually rests in a “track” section that is 1/8" larger than the stud dimension. This creates “instant” wall growth. We provide the 50 (5") frame at the same price as a 47 (4 7/8") to accommodate the larger wall size. When a 4 7/8" frame is used on a 5" plus wall, it becomes necessary for the installer to “open it up”. When this happens, a concave condition is created at the door stop moving the pivot point of the hinge pivot toward the strike side and it becomes much more difficult to align the frame pieces and maintain a tight miter on the casing.

Why do we require a fastener at every casing clip or every 11" around the full perimeter of the frame?

1. To obtain our fire rating, we tested with a fastener every 11" around the perimeter of the frame and therefore, in order to retain the fire rating we must adhere to this rule. 2. The fastener is placed at each clip to guarantee that the back side of the clip is tight to the wall. This feature holds the casing tight to the wall and keeps it from rattling or sliding.

What three requirements must be met to assure a tight miter when installing our frame?

1. In order to achieve a tight miter on our casing, you must first install the frame with a 90 degree angle between the upright and header. This can be easily achieved by making sure the ears on the header extend out to the edge of the upright and touch it all the way across. 2. When assembling the header and upright casing pieces you must use our corner bracket to keep the pieces in the same plane and locked tight together. 3. Make sure there is a fastener at each clip so the clips holds the casing tight to the wall.

When installing our frame in a masonry wall, why do we recommend using a steel sub-frame?

What would be the masonry rough opening?

Using our standard sub-frame (mullion insert) creates a perfect rough opening to install the frame. The sub frame is finished the same color as the frame so there is no need to paint the sub frame if a wood sub-frame is used. The masonry rough opening should be 4" wider than the door width and 2 1/4" over the door height if using TA-8, TA-23 or TA-28 casing.
